Not too late for expats' free tix
FOREIGN residents who have been in the city since October 1 with valid passports and visas, but haven't registered at communities where they live, are still eligible for free World Expo tickets.
The tickets, being given to foreigners who have lived here for six months as of March 31, are being distributed to households.
Singles don't qualify. A household is defined as at least two people: husband and wife, or parent and child can get one ticket.
Registration is still open to those qualified. The first batch of tickets will be delivered starting May 15 to those who had registered by the end of last month.
Zhang Lingbao, a community official with the Yanlord Riverside Garden in the Pudong New Area, said more than 600 foreigners have registered at her community. And she expected more will come.
As many residents at the neighborhood are often on business trips, the community left notice on registration in both Chinese and English at each apartment, Zhang said. And the same method will be adopted when delivering tickets.
According to Zhang, delivering tickets is also a chance to carry out a census of foreigners living in their community.
In addition, tickets are also available to three other types of families: those with local permanent household registrations, or hukou, those with local permanent residence permits and those holding local temporary residence permits for at least six months.
Also in the gift pack are a transport card of 200 yuan (US$29), a thank-you letter, an Expo site map and a souvenir badge in the shape of mascot Haibao.
Tickets can be used on any day within a designated month from June to September.
Shanghai has also launched a hotline (962200) for queries on the free tickets and cards and another (12388) specifically to receive complaints.
