Novel tissue therapy now used by local doctors to treat vitiligo patients
Local doctors are now using a novel tissue engineering therapy to treat people with vitiligo by skin transplant and the technology has received good effects, experts told a skin health forum at Changhai Hospital yesterday.
Vitiligo is a disease difficult for complete treatment through traditional therapies like medication and ultraviolet phototherapy. Though it has little impact to physical health, it seriously influences a person’s appearance and thus influences the life quality. The incidence is one in every 1000 in the nation and 5 in every 1000 in Shanghai. Patients usually start to show symptoms before 20 years old.
“Skin transplant therapy based on tissue engineering was developed in the United States and has been used in clinical practice in countries like US, Japan and South Korea,” said Dr Xu Jinhua from Huashan Hospital. “Huashan started relevant trial since 2011 and so far 50 patients have finished the treatment with 84 percent of effective rate.”
He said the surgery involves using skin cells taken from normally-pigmented areas of the patient’s own body and then separates epidermis cell and melanophore from skin for artificial epidermis cultivation.
Then the artificial skin will be transplanted onto the skin parts, which are damaged by vitiligo.
