Number of non-smoker patients suffering lung cancer on the rise: experts
THERE are a growing number of non-smokers suffering lung cancer, experts told a Shanghai-Taipei health forum today.
Dr Chen Haiquan, president of Shanghai Chest Hospital, said about 80 percent of lung cancer is related with smoking and quitting smoking is the most effect measure to prevent lung cancer. Smokers who quit before 55 years old can have significantly longer life span to those who quit after 55.
“In the past dozens of years, the number of smoker lung cancer patients didn’t reduce, while we saw more non-smokers also suffered this disease, which can be related with kitchen smoke, air pollution and life style,” Chen said. “More researches are required to study those non-smokers’ mechanism.”
He said Shanghai is promoting an early screening system for lung cancer through CT scan for those with high risk for early lung cancer detection and treatment. Those in early stage can have a zero relapse if receiving surgery in time.
