Official gets 6 years jail for 250,000 yuan graft

AN official with the Qingpu District Water Bureau was sentenced to six years in prison for taking bribes totaling more than 250,000 yuan (US$39,312), a local court said yesterday.

The convict, Liu Chengguang, 47, received the bribes in the form of kickbacks when he was in charge of the Zhujiajiao water drainage and irrigation station in suburban Qingpu District.

Prosecutors said Liu helped those offering bribes to win construction projects such as drainage readjustment and land leveling.

In return, he received 250,000 yuan from private contractors between 2002 and 2009.

Liu was born into a poor family in Qingpu and became an employee of the station in 1982. He was promoted to head of station in 1999 for outstanding work, the court heard. With development of Zhujiajiao New Town in 2002, Liu started to manage projects and subcontracted some to private contractors.
