Official sacked for 'bribe-taking'
A TOP official in the city's Putuo District has been sacked for accepting bribes, the authorities announced yesterday.
A judicial investigation is now under way into the activities of Chen Meng, who took up the position of deputy chief of Putuo District in April.
Chen, aged 49, allegedly accepted large sums to help companies win construction contracts when he was deputy chief of Songjiang District.
He is also alleged to have persuaded property developers to invest in the bank where his wife worked, in order to further her career.
According to the notice released by the Shanghai Discipline Inspection Commission, an investigation was launched against Chen after reports were received.
No other details were made available by the commission.
Yang Haipeng, an investigative reporter for the Caijing magazine, claimed on his Sina Weibo microblog that when Chen was deputy chief of Songjiang District his wife asked him to help her attract savings to boost her ambitions to become director of the Shanghai branch of China Minsheng Banking Corp.
Chen then was in charge of the district's construction department and asked property developers there to become his wife's clients.
She was successful in her bid to become director for the bank after securing deposits worth several billion yuan.
Chen was reported to the discipline commission by a promotion candidate who lost out to his wife, Yang claimed on his microblog.
Prior to the eight years he worked in Songjiang District, Chen had held posts as office director of Jing'an District government, deputy Party secretary of Jing'an District Property Management Bureau, and the general manager of Jing'an Properties Group.
Last year, Cai Zhiqiang, former chief of Putuo District, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for accepting 2.84 million yuan (US$444,703) in bribes.
And Yin Kunneng, former office director of the Putuo District government, was jailed for 11 years for taking 720,000 yuan in bribes.
