Online lover not the man he seemed...
A 20-YEAR-OLD unemployed woman has been jailed for 12 years for pretending to be a man and conning a would-be lover out of more than 400,000 yuan (US$58,621).
Judges from the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court said Zhang Xiangxiang pretended to be a man on the Internet and targeted women around the age of 30 who were keen to get married.
The victim, surnamed Hu, 26, came across Zhang on a matchmaking Website in April 2007. Zhang claimed to be a 30-year-old local man who was working as the chief executive officer of a Swiss financial company in Shanghai.
Although there was never a meeting after Zhang made various excuses, Hu still believed the deception and fell in love with the "man" because he seemed to care for her very much and often sent her flowers and gifts, prosecutors said.
But then Zhang began to borrow money from Hu for "emergencies."
Hu sent more than 400,000 yuan to Zhang in a period of less than a year before her parents found out and called the police.
When they caught up with Zhang they found everything had been invented ... except the bank accounts.
