Outdoor exercising might be harmful to heart on smoggy days: warned doctors
DOING physical exercises on smoggy days can be harmful to the heart, medical experts warned on a medical forum talking about heart health.
“There are big risks for cardiovascular health if doing morning exercise in polluted days, as tiny pollutant PM2.5 can directly enter blood through breath and stimulate blood vessels, causing hypertension and even more serious results like irregular beating,” said Dr Liu Zhongmin, president of Shanghai East Hospital. “People had better stay inside in smoggy days and must avoid doing exercise outdoor.”
Winter is the peak season for cardiovascular diseases, when the mortality of myocardial infarction is three times of that in summer. Experts said keeping warm, healthy diet, enough sleep and appropriate exercise are all important for heart health.
“Heart disease is not only a disease prevalent among the elderly but also a prevalent disease among children,” said Dr Sun Kun, president of Xinhua Hospital. “There are 130,000 children born with congenital heart disease in China, No.1 congenital deformity.”
