Over 200 flights delayed as blue alert leveled torrential rain continues to batter the city

THE Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a blue alert for the torrential rain at 11:45am today.

As much as 50 millimeters of rain are expected to hit most parts of the city in the next 12 hours, the bureau said.

A transient heavy thunderstorm will hit the city around noon. Afterwards, the storm is expected to move towards the southeastern parts of the city, weather forecasters added.

As of 1 pm, no flooding had been reported yet.

However, The local air traffic controller issued a second level orange alert for flight delays at around 1pm. The air traffic capacity of the Pudong and Hongqiao airports are predicted to be cut down by 60 per cent from 1:30pm to 6pm because of the thunder and downpour, the Air Traffic Management Bureau with East China Civil Aviation Administration of China said.

Over 60 flights have been cancelled and over 200 were delayed by 2pm.

The Hongqiao airport was more severely affected with a tremendous amount of flight delays.

Above 160 flights were delayed at Hongqiao along with 40 flights cancelled. More than eight flights at the airport have been delayed for beyond 4 hours, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

Approximately 11 flights have been diverted to land at the Pudong airport due to the fact that the airport wasn’t seriously affected, the authority said.

The Pudong airport has about 25 cancelled flights including 70 flights delayed.

China Eastern and China Southern airlines issued notices to their passengers to ask them to double check their flights before heading out to the airports in order to avoid being stranded.

The severe storm will likely continue to keep affecting both airports until 6pm.
