Parents get back baby they left in park
A three-month-old boy, deserted in a downtown park by his parents after the duo had a quarrel, was returned and reunited with his parents, local police said yesterday.
The parents got their baby back after receiving a warning and fines, police said, ending a nearly two-week drama.
Police said the parents "cost public resources when the baby stayed at the hospital" waiting for DNA checks.
Zhu Ming, a Changning police officer, expressed hope that the couple would "take the lesson."
The incident happened May 5 at Zhongshan Park when police received calls about the baby all alone in a stroller. Police took the boy to a hospital for health checks after waiting in the park for about half an hour to make sure the parents didn't return. Diapers and other baby items were found in the baby carriage.
The boy's mother went to the police station the next day to claim the baby after officers posted his pictures online. The mother said she was "regretful for what they have done."
The woman, from Sichuan Province, told police the couple left the baby after they had a quarrel about "who should take care of the baby."
The duo took the baby to Shanghai for a physical check-up and went to the park for play, police said. Then the couple left separately, with the woman going to Wuxi in neighboring Jiangsu Province and the man back to his hometown in Sichuan.
