Park-and-ride locations offer 10,000 car spaces

FIVE new park-and-ride lots, providing 10,000 car spaces, will open for business during the April 20 trial run of the World Expo.

The lots will be at Shanghai International Circuit, Hongqiao Integrated Transportation Hub, Songjiang University Town, Guyang Road N. and Songjiang Bus Station, said Huang XiaoYong, a Shanghai Transport and Port Authority spokesman.

"The new lots are expected to encourage more people to take public transportations to the Expo site," Huang said.

Visitors can transfer to Metro lines or to special bus lines to get to the Expo site.

After the Expo, the lots will remain to offer local residents a much easier way to transfer to public transportation when they drive around the Yangtze River Delta region.

Visitors from Zhejiang Province or Jiangsu Province may arrive at the park-and-ride lots by expressway and then transfer to public transportations to enter the city.

Park-and-ride users will be charged 5 yuan (73 US cents) per day at Shanghai International Circuit parking lot, and 10 yuan at the other four lots.

Park-and-ride lots are much less expensive than lots in the city's downtown areas, which usually charge 5 to 10 yuan per hour.
