Part-time worker, 23, stabbed to death at Xujiahui McDonald's
A 23-year-old employee of a McDonald's in the downtown Xujiahui area in Shanghai was stabbed to death early yesterday morning.
Police were still hunting for the suspect last night.
The part-time employee, Li Feng, was stabbed at 4:30am, after trying to stop the suspect from sleeping in the round-the-clock restaurant at No.1 Tianyaoqiao Road near Zhaojiabang Road, according to witnesses.
Li died before arriving at the Zhongshan Hospital.
Li was trying to dissuade the suspect from sleeping on the restaurant's chairs. His colleagues discovered the quarrel, but the suspect, who had brought a knife into the restaurant, attacked Li before they could intervene.
They immediately called the ambulance.
"Li had no signs of life when reaching the hospital," said Zhang Yaping, a doctor in the emergency department of the Zhongshan Hospital.
"Li died for excessive bleeding," Zhang added, "He suffered three cuts to his neck, shoulder and liver."
Li's mother cried his name again and again in the hospital. She said that Li was a kind young man who worked very hard to help his family, poor people from the suburban Jinshan District of Shanghai. Already having a full time job, he took the part-time McDonald's work to earn more money.
Police were still looking for the suspect last night.
Surveillance equipment in the restaurant captured a picture of him, police said.
The restaurant was closed yesterday with a note saying: "Operation ceased for equipment overhaul."
The Shanghai McDonald's Food Co Ltd expressed deep condolences and said they would offer comfort to the family, without going to details.
According to Liu Chunquan, a local lawyer, restaurant employees have the right to drive off customers sleeping in the 24-hour establishment. "A restaurant is different from a hotel, after all," Liu said.
