Patent applications hit 80,000 in Shanghai last year

SHANGHAI handled a record number of patent applications last year, which exceeded 80,000, the Municipal Intellectual Property Administration said today.

Statistics showed the number of patent applications for inventions, utility models and exterior designs climbed 12.7 percent last year to 80,215.

The biggest increase came from invention patent applications, which made up 40 percent of the total. The volume of design patent applications dropped sharply by 21.5 percent from 2010, the administration said.

"Design patent requires less technology than the other two patents," said Nei Li, an official with the administration. "And there are a lot of junk patents under that category."

Nei said the government has worked out policies to encourage more invention patents as the city values patent quality more than quantity.

Last year the administration approved about 48,000 patents. The figure is slightly smaller compared with 2010, although the number of applications it received increased significantly.
