Pavilion move plan a 'good idea'

A SENIOR Shanghai World Expo official said moving some pavilions to Chongming Island after 2010 Shanghai World Expo is a good idea.

Zhou Hanmin, vice director of the Shanghai World Expo Executive Committee and a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said on the sidelines of the advisory body's annual meeting that the idea merited serious consideration.

The idea, promoted by Zhang Zhao'an, a member of the National People's Congress, came after the Expo became a major talking point in Beijing, according to the Oriental Morning Post today.

Relocating the pavilions will stimulate the development of the island, Zhang said.

Participating countries hold the property rights for pavilions they build themselves but new site owners would have to shoulder the cost of moving. Core pavilions will become permanent city landmarks after the Expo.
