Peach Blossom Festival beckons visitors

LOCALS are invited to have an outing this weekend to view flowering peach orchards as the 2012 Shanghai Peach Blossom Festival opens on Sunday.

This year's festival is a latecomer compared with those in the past 23 years because of prolonged chilly weather and incessant rains in February and early March, the organizer said.

The festival's opening is expected to draw a huge number of visitors as it coincides with the eve of the Qingming Festival holiday that runs from April 2-4.

But the best time to see the flowers is around April 10 when peach trees are in full blossom. The festival will last until April 25.

Peach blossoms symbolize longevity and prosperity in Chinese culture and admiring peach blossoms is a popular pastime in spring.

The festival will be held in peach orchards in Datuan, Nanhui, Xinchang, Binhai and Heqing, all rural towns in Pudong New Area. Tickets to these orchards cost 20 yuan to 55 yuan (US$3.2-US$8.7).

Ticket holders can also enjoy discounts when visiting 20 or so local tourist spots, including Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center observatory deck, and Madame Tussauds Shanghai.
