Peeping Toms at Apple store
DON'T wear short skirts if you are going to visit Apple's new store in Shanghai, girls have been warned.
A customer at the opening day on Saturday, surnamed Lin, spotted a group of "creepy looking" men at the bottom of the spiral staircase in the Pudong New Area store's glass cylindrical construction looking upwards attentively. At first she thought they were admiring the high-tech store's modern design.
But she soon realized their true purpose when she too looked up as she was leaving the building.
"It's embarrassing. You can easily see the underpants of young ladies who are walking upstairs with short skirts via the gaps between stairs," said Lin.
Lin said although the stairs were made of frosted glass, the men were still able to peer through the gaps to catch a glimpse of the female customers.
She alerted staff to the situation and left. But as she did so, she spotted another pair of young men looking up from ground level with what she described as "wicked smiles" on their faces.
An official from the Apple store said she would urge staff at the shop to attend to the problem. She said the design of spiral stairs was adopted at many Apple stores in other countries, but this was the first time she had heard that some visitors would use them to leer at girls.
According to the Shanghai Morning Post, an official at the store surnamed Wu said some other visitors had complained about the problem. Wu said he would report the problem to his supervisor.
