Pet pair held for turtle rustling
A PET store owner and his employee have been detained by police in Xuhui District in connection with the theft of 160 turtles from a competitor.
The pet shop owner, surnamed Jiao, had disputes with a fellow stallholder in a pet market and bore a grudge, according to police.
It is alleged that he and an employee, surnamed Qian, hatched the plan to steal their competitor’s turtles, leaving a note at the scene to frame another store owner who had argued with Ni.
On March 28, Ni told police his store had been broken into and 160 turtles of various species worth 200,000 yuan (US$32,300) stolen.
Police found a note left at the scene, stating, “You can call the police to catch me,” linked to another stallholder.
After checking surveillance camera footage and questioning stallholders, police targeted Qian as their suspect.
Qian and Jiao were held on April 14 and 30 turtles retrieved, said police.
According to police, the other turtles had been released in nearby creeks.
