Plant science center opens at botanic garden

INSTITUTE of Plant Physiology & Ecology opened a science center today at Shanghai Chenshan Botanic Garden to conduct research into plant species protection.

"The center, which targets plants in the eastern China region, will be built into the best plant museum at the same latitude," said Xue Hongwei, director of the Institute of Plant Physiology & Ecology. "Its collection has surpassed 10,000 species."

The institute also announced today that its journal Molecular Plant ranked fifth among 190 international journals of its kind. The ranking was disclosed last Friday. It is the highest ranking among all plant journals in Asia, reflecting the rising academic capability and influence of China.

With an aim of collecting more than 30,000 plants, scientists started their work during the garden's construction in late 2005. When it opened in 2010, the garden had collected over 9,000 kinds of plants.

The institute is under the Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences.
