Police: Cyclist faked accidents
A CYCLIST has been detained by police for allegedly staging accidents in order to get compensation.
Xuhui District police said suspect Ding Zhongxin circled neighborhoods on his old bicycle looking to get hit by cars.
After getting hit, he would fake an injury and demand compensation, police said.
According to officers, Ding he had been involved in at least 30 such accidents and was paid 20,000 yuan (US$2,930). Sixteen cases had been confirmed, police said.
On January 6, Ding was seen by two plainclothes officers circling neighborhoods in Xuhui District with his rattletrap bicycle. The officers, also on bicycles, started following him.
"We always kept a distance of about 4 meters and adjusted our clothes from time to time to prevent being discovered," said officer Zhu Zhenghua.
About 35 minutes later, Ding turned on Guilin Road, near Qinzhou Road, as a white sedan drove by. Ding pointed at one of the bent wheels on his bicycle and accused the driver of hitting him. Ding claimed he was injured and asked for 50 yuan compensation.
Officers caught Ding after he received the money and fled the scene.
