Police: Man killed wife and 4 others

A MAN has been detained after he was accused of slaughtering five people in the city's suburban Minhang District on Monday night, including his wife and sister, police said.

The suspect, Yuan Zhiwei, was taken into custody but the police refused to comment on the case yesterday.

Yuan's neighbors in Huacao Town, Minhang District, said a family dispute might have sparked the man's killing rampage, which took place in three separate spots in the town within a span of three hours, up until 10:30pm.

A middle-aged couple was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood around 8pm when their son came home at Hongxi Road. Both had been stabbed several times, the son, surnamed Sun, told reporters yesterday.

The woman, surnamed Cai, was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital on Monday night and her husband, surnamed Sun, died yesterday morning, their son said. The relationship between the couple and Yuan was unclear.

The second killing is believed to have taken place about two hours later, around 10pm, according to Yuan's neighbors.

Yuan's wife was found dead at home on Lianyou Road, in Huacao Town's Weixing Village, about 7 kilometers from the previous scene. A neighbor surnamed Qiu said the neighborhood heard a quarrel between Yuan and his wife at their house and later saw police rushing to the scene.

Yuan also showed up at his sister's home last night, about five minutes walk from Yuan's house, where his sister and brother-in-law were later found dead, neighbors said.

"I was taking a shower outside my home, about 10:30pm, and I heard some woman screaming from their home," a neighbor surnamed Chen told Shanghai Daily. "Then I saw the man walk out. He was calm and was, like, hiding something in his pocket while lifting up his pants."

Chen said he did not know Yuan's sister and her husband were killed until the police arrived.

Yuan's nephew, the dead couple's son, declined to comment. Yuan's other family members, from neighboring Jiangsu Province, rushed to Shanghai last night.Yuan is a truck driver who usually transports construction materials such as sand and cement, neighbors said.
