Police: Online, Telecom Fraud Cases Rising
CITY police said yesterday that they stopped 714 telecom/Internet scam cases so far this year, with nearly 36 million yuan (US$5.8 million) in economic losses averted.
Such schemes are on the rise, police said.
Police warned that the suspects usually pretend to be law-enforcement officials or schoolteachers enticing victims to transfer money to "safety accounts" at banks.
The scams represent new ways to cheat online buyers, and police said they would join with city banks and telecom operators to warn people.
