Police break up gang of traveling thieves
POLICE in Pudong New Area have broken up a theft gang that allegedly traveled the country to steal valuables from people at exhibitions.
Most of the items they stole were expensive cameras and photographic accessories, police said today.
Police targeted the group after catching one suspected female gang member identified as Miao Miao. She was caught stealing at the Shanghai International Auto Exhibition on April 25 this year.
During the investigation, police discovered Miao had been caught for theft along with some accomplices during the Shanghai International Music Fireworks Festival in October.
Police expanded their investigation and found more suspects. Most of them had been arrested for theft before.
Police said the suspects left the city for Hangzhou three days after Miao was caught. However they didn't flee in fear of being caught, but to the next exhibition, police said.
There, they targeted people with expensive cameras and camera lens worth tens of thousands of yuan.
Police seized more than 30 camera lens from the gang and caught another five suspects for receiving and selling stolen goods.
The gang confessed they committed 15 crimes in Shanghai since the end of last year. Most of the stolen goods were sold on second-hand markets, police said.
Police did not say how many members were in the gang.
The gang members made a special deck of playing cards that included the date and place of major exhibitions nationwide. Police said each card had an exhibition listed and it was their schedule for the whole year.
They said one had Shanghai International Auto Exhibition from April 22 to 28 printed on the card and another had 5th China International Cartoon and Animation Festival from April 28 to May 3 on it.
