Police bust fake iPhone gang and detain 15 suspects
SHANGHAI police said today that they busted a gang for making and selling counterfeit iPhones and detained 15 suspects.
The economic crime department of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said the gang was well-organized. Every member was assigned a specific job, such as purchasing components, assembling fake phones, and finding customers.
Their underground workshop was discovered in July in Zhabei District, close to the city's largest cell phone market.
Police seized more than 200 fake iPhones in the raid and found more than 5,000 components. The forgery case involved an estimated 5 million yuan (US$782,230).
The components were purchased in south China's Guangdong Province and the bogus iPhones were sold to the city's unauthorized dealers and on the Internet, police said. The case is still under investigation.
