Police bust prostitution rings, 62 detained

SHANGHAI police said that since September, they have busted four organized prostitution rings that worked in economy hotels and detained 62 suspects.

Police said the gangs operated much like the largest and most recent case, in which they detained 33 suspects in October for running prostitution operations in inexpensive hotels.

In that case, police in the Pudong New Area found in May that small cards that listed "alluring obscene information with phone numbers" were often distributed at economy hotels.

The prostitution occurred in random hotels, with no stable location, police said.

Once a client called, they would ask the hotel name and room number and call back to confirm the information.

Prostitutes were driven to the hotel and accompanied to the room. Some suspects would stay in the lobby of the hotel to keep watch.

In an October 18 raid, police caught 22 suspects led by a man surnamed Zhou at five hideouts and 11 prostitutes at different hotel rooms.
