Police catch gang of four as wheels stolen from tour buses
FOUR men have been caught after they allegedly stole wheels from tour buses, in some cases while passengers were still on board, Pudong New Area police said yesterday.
Police said the suspects had confessed to more than 60 thefts, 20 of which have been confirmed, with a value about 150,000 yuan (US$22,376). Most of the thefts occurred around the World Expo site, police said.
In May, three of the suspects, wearing white gloves and uniforms, removed tires from a tour bus outside a hotel on Dongtai Road in Pudong.
An officer surnamed Tang said passengers were on the bus at the time.
"When the passengers asked the suspects what they were doing, they just pretended to be repair workers," said Tang, adding that the suspects worked quickly and left the scene in a minibus.
"No one realized what they had done until the suspects disappeared with the tires," Tang said.
Four similar cases were reported in the following month, police said.
Police traced the suspects using surveillance cameras. A sticker on the minibus' windshield led police to the suspects, who were caught on September 6 on Huayi Road in Pudong.
