The suspect surnamed Zhang, who was caught in Gansu Province, confessed to the theft on January 20, police said. He sold the stolen ring, which was worth more than 6,000 yuan (US$964), according to Songjiang District police.

The robbery happened around 7:30pm on January 20 at a jewelry store on Qiuchang Road. Zhang, in his 20s, pretended to be a customer and asked a shop assistant to show him the ring, officers said. When the ring was taken from the display case, Zhang grabbed it and fled, according to police.
