Police close roads around fire site

TRAFFIC was controlled around the fire scene on Jiaozhou Road near Yuyao Road.

Traffic was banned from Anyuan Road to Changde Road, Xikang Road, Kangding Road and Changping Road to ensure ambulances and fire engines to pass through smoothly, according to the Jing'an District Traffic Police Monitoring Center.

But the Changping Road Station of Metro Line 7 operated normally.

At least 12 people were killed and about 50 wounded as of 6:20pm in a big blaze that engulfed a 28-storey building since 2pm this afternoon.

The police didn't say when the traffic in the area would be resumed. With the arrival of the evening rush hour, serious traffic jam appeared around the fire scene.

Several public bus routes, including No. 54, No. 113, No. 765 and No. 76 detoured, skipped station or shortened routes to avoid the fire scene.

People were required not to get close to the fire scene to ensure safety.
