Police detain 3 in bus stabbing case
POLICE yesterday detained three suspects after a gang boarded a bus in Minhang District on Monday, robbing and stabbing passengers.
Officers say they are still hunting the rest of the 10-strong gang and urged them to turn themselves in.
The suspects were detained at around 3pm yesterday in Minhang, after officers reviewed surveillance camera footage and interviewed witnesses.
Four migrant workers were seriously injured when they came to the aid of fellow passengers being robbed.
Yesterday, the workers from Anhui Province regained consciousness following emergency surgery.
The men - who have been hailed have-a-go heroes by many locals - had said they feared they could not afford their medical bills. But officials at Dahua Hospital said they would treat them first.
Yan Jian, head of Dahua Hospital, said: "We admire their bravery."
Hospital staff and local residents have been donating money toward the 8,000 yuan (US$1,211) medical bill. One of the injured men, surnamed Wang, who suffered intestinal injuries, said he appreciated the donations, but insisted he wanted to pay his own bill.
About 4pm on Monday, Wang, along with relatives and colleagues, tried to stop a gang robbing passengers on a No.729 bus. The thieves stabbed the men, leaving two with severe abdominal and back wounds, before fleeing with a woman's handbag.
The bus company said it gave police the vehicle's surveillance camera footage.
Passengers of No. 729 buses said this was not the first time thieves have struck.
If there is trouble, bus drivers should first call the police and drive to a police station or wait for officers, said Zhang Qing, an operations manager with the bus company.
Meanwhile, a local traffic watchdog said it is collecting evidence to identify two city cabbies who refused to take the injured men to hospital and one driver who only agreed after receiving almost 10 times the usual fee.
