Police detain man in gay lover extortion case

A bisexual man in Minhang District has been detained for extorting 121,600 yuan (US$19,414) from his boyfriend, Shanghai police said today.

Having squandered all his money gambling, the suspect surnamed Zhang, 32, turned to his boyfriend surnamed Chen, 52, for cash and threatened to make public photos of the two of them on the same bed.

Chen told police he gave in to the demand because he didn’t want his family and friends to know he is gay.

Zhang is married and has a child. He met Chen in October through a mutual friend.
