Police nab 9 burglars preying on region

SHANGHAI police said they have detained nine suspects in the city of Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, for dozens of burglaries in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Gang members confessed to more than 20 burglaries in Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nanjing. The gang was led by a suspect surnamed Chen, and the value of the case was estimated at more than 600,000 yuan (US$95,802), Hongkou District police said yesterday.

Shanghai police began to investigate the case after January 24, when the suspects broke in a residential area on Wenshui Road E. twice and stole watches and diamond rings worth 400,000 yuan, police said.

Chen was in charge of selling the spoils and providing accommodation for the suspects while another suspect surnamed Zhu directed the burglaries, police found during the investigation.

After locating the suspects, police raided their hideout in Nanjing and found spoils such as a diamond ring, an iPad Mini, 1 million South Korean won (US$921), more than 10,000 yuan and gold jewelry, police said.
