Police officer in hostage drama

A BRAVE policewoman helped save a pedestrian from a man holding a knife to her throat, despite being injured herself in the process.

The man detained, surnamed Qian, is alleged to have killed his girlfriend, injured two women passers-by and attempted to wound a third, Songjiang District police said yesterday.

Zhu Linfang attended the incident at about 4:17pm on Songwei Road N. on Tuesday after reports that a man was running amok with a knife.

Two female pedestrians had been stabbed and he was holding another woman hostage.

Zhu attempted to talk with Qian, but as she approached she received cuts to her left cheek and hand. When Qian tried to phone his family, she and other officers tackled him, with Zhu protecting the hostage with her own body. Qian was restrained and handcuffed at 4:31pm.

Qian, a migrant worker, was later found to have murdered his girlfriend in his dorm room on nearby Baosheng Road at about 4pm, following a quarrel, according to police.

Zhu said that during the drama she focused on trying to save the hostage.
