Police officer killed month before due to become father

A YOUNG police officer died in hospital last night after being dragged along by a BMW said to have been trying to make an illegal turn.

Officer Mao Shengquan, 32, had been due to become a father for the first time next month.

The BMW driver Sun Haojie, also 32, has been detained under suspicion of intentional injury, police said this morning.

Mao had tried to halt Sun's red BMW at the junction of Wuzhong Road and Hongmei Road in Minhang District at around 5:30pm.

According to police, the BMW had been trying to take a left turn from a lane in which vehicles can only go straight ahead.

Sun drove off and sped up while Mao was holding on to his car door, dragging the officer for about 10 meters, police said.

Mao's head struck the ground and he died of a brain hemorrhage at about 10pm at Shanghai 6th People's Hospital last night.

The young officer's wife is due to give birth to their first child next month.

Mao had worked as a traffic officer for eight years, said police.
 
Sun is an IT professional who is married and has an 8-year-old daughter, according to police.
