Police reject HD camera surveillance claim
SHANGHAI police denied an online claim that high-definition cameras will be used to detect and punish driving violations, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.
A microblog on Weibo.com said yesterday that violations such as not wearing the seatbelt, making phone call while driving, running the yellow light, and parking beyond the stop line will be punished.
"Whatever we do in the car will be monitored by police. This is a violation of privacy," some netizens commented on the tweet.
Shanghai police said similar allegations had been made in Hainan and Sichuan provinces in recent two years, which were later denied by local police.
Shanghai traffic police said they haven't used the so-called high-definition cameras but asked drivers to follow traffic rules voluntarily.
