Police save hostage as suspects seek 3m yuan

A WOMAN who was kidnapped by three suspects demanding 3 million yuan (US$481,991) in ransom was rescued yesterday and the men detained, police said.

The woman, surnamed Chen, 27, was rescued unharmed by officers about eight hours after she was taken hostage, according to police in the Pudong New Area.

Chen was kidnapped on Thursday afternoon as she was driving her car out of a parking lot on Xiuyan Road.

The men - a 25-year-old surnamed Gu, a 29-year-old surnamed Ma and a 30-year-old surnamed Zhu - planned to kidnap someone to resolve their deep gambling debts, police said.

They targeted Chen, who was driving an Infiniti, stopped her car and dragged her out of it. She was taken to a hideout on Jinghai Road.

The suspects then called Chen's family to make the ransom demand and the family called police.

Police established a special squad and raided the suspects' hideout about 12:30am yesterday.

The men had confessed their crime by yesterday afternoon, police said.
