Police smash two cell phone porn gangs

POLICE in Shanghai and neighboring Zhejiang Province have busted two gangs and caught 45 suspects who allegedly ran pornographic mobile phone applications in two separate cases.

Shanghai police caught seven suspects who allegedly ran more than 40 pornographic WAP (wireless application protocol) sites, designed to be accessed over smart phones, China.com.cn reported today.

Police found more than 50,000 pornographic pictures and 10,000 videos on the sites. They received an average of 2 million hits every month, the report said.

The alleged gang leader, surnamed Sheng, began setting up WAP sites in 2005 and earned more than 1 million yuan (US$147,059) in profits.

Police in Jinhua city of Zhejiang closed more than 100 pornographic WAP sites and caught 38 suspects.

Police firstly discovered the ringleader surnamed Jin uploading pornographic materials to a WAP site in April this year.

During the investigation, police found dozens of more people involved, including a Beijing-based company which offered servers, and a Guangzhou-based company which maintained the sites.
