Police stabbing arrest
PROSECUTORS have approved the arrest of a 17-year-old youth alleged to have stabbed a policeman and robbed a convenience store, the Huangpu District Prosecutors' Office said yesterday.
Prosecutors allege the suspect, surnamed Lu, went into an Alldays store on Huaihai Road E. at 3am on July 11, on the pretext of buying a drink.
The unemployed teenager, who previously worked in Henan Province and came to the city this month, produced a 30-centimete knife, threatened the two members of staff and demanded the takings.
One member of staff opened the cash register and gave him a wad of bills worth 440 yuan (US$68.3), while secretly pressing a panic button under the counter to alert police.
When police officer Zhu Xuequan entered, Lu is said to have slashed him and fled.
Zhu, 52, and another officer pursued the suspect for more than 500 meters and captured Lu on Yunnan Road S. after spraying pepper water in his eyes.
Zhu suffered cuts on his head, left ear and left side of his face in the attack.
He was released from hospital yesterday.
The Shanghai Public Security Bureau awarded Zhu the First Class Merit Citation in recognition of his bravery.
