Police suspect murder as body found

A woman's body was found wrapped in sheets yesterday morning in a power distribution room at a residential complex in the Pudong New Area after it started to stink, police said.

Officers said the case is being treated as a homicide.

The body was found about 9:30am yesterday at the Ruiyangyuan residential complex in Zhoupu Town, police said.

The corpse had been in the room for some time as residents had detected a foul odor about a week ago, police said.

"I sensed the stinky smell about a week ago and I thought it was some trash," said a resident surnamed Song who first found the corpse. "I tried to clean the floor and lit some incense but the smell was still there."

Song eventually pried the door open with her husband, thinking a dead cat or dog might be inside, and found the woman's body wrapped in sheets.

"It was well packed and we were scared," Song said.

Song reported the case to the complex's security guards.

The complex's property management company said about 70 percent of tenants in the community are migrant workers.
