Police swoop on fake luxury goods

SHANGHAI police have cracked down on groups specializing in selling fake luxury products, such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton handbags and purses, in a series of actions code named "Eagle Eye II" that seized goods worth a total of 107 million yuan (US$15.65 million).

Last Friday, plainclothes police officers were taken into an underground store in Lane 990 Huaihai Road M. by street scalpers.

The store was an apartment in a three-story building with four rooms packed with counterfeit bags, clothes, watches and golf clubs with names like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Burberry, Chanel, Coach, Dior, Omega and Mont Blanc.

Police soon surrounded the building and caught six suspects, including the boss.

According to "Eagle Eye II" investigators, 60 suspects were nabbed, with 30-plus underground stores closed and more than 26,000 fake items seized in raids last week.
