Police to give rewards for tips on crime

SHANGHAI police will grant rewards to informants who provide tips that help solve criminal cases from now until the end of next year, police said in a notice yesterday.

Police said the policy is a good way to create a secure environment with the coming celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

However, the notice also warned about providing false information.

"Those who give disinformation should bear corresponding legal responsibility," the notice said.

Tipsters will be rewarded for information on crimes such as endangering national or public security, violating the socialist market economy, violating civil or democratic rights, and property violation.

Informants can get a reward up to 300,000 yuan (US$43,926) if the information provided is related to terrorism, serious violence, gang crime or major economic crimes, the bureau said.

Public tips are an effective way to crack down on crimes and preserve public order, police said.
