Police undertake extensive water training
POLICE officers patrolling the city's waterways have been partaking in training drills throughout the summer, Shanghai police said today.
The officers are being trained on swimming, first aid and motorboat riding skills, in order to be prepared to react fast to different kinds of emergencies.
In the first half of this year, the city's "police on water" covered 77 cases and emergencies, with 17 people saved from the water, police said.
The police tackle cases such as thefts, illegal fishing and garbage dumping, while helping with stranded boats, as well as tracking boats with outstanding offenses for their colleagues from the maritime safety administration.
During the same period, 15 people were punished for using boats without licenses in 16 cases.
Another part of their job is to inspect boats and boatmen.
The water police squad has about 300 officers.
