Police use pepper spray on woman

A POLICE officer sprayed a woman with pepper spray yesterday morning, after she threatened him with a sharp implement, local police said.

The officer had been attempting to question the woman, who was trying to remove a car's license plates, police said.

The woman, who was not named, was "not acting normally" and was trying to prize off the plates with the incorrect tools, according to Yangpu District police.

She raised suspicions when she was spotted in a residential area on Minjing Road, witnesses said.

A resident said the woman, about 30 years old, stopped at a car and started to tear off the car's license plate.

A security guard stopped her, but the woman became angry and, waving a sharp tool, shouted at the guard and the police officer who had come to the scene, police said.

The officer sprayed pepper on the woman and restrained her. She was taken to hospital.

An investigation into the incident was ongoing yesterday.
