Police warn of telephone scam
SHANGHAI police are warning locals to be alert for suspicious telephone calls, as the number of telecom scams has increased recently.
Police said victims are usually informed of amounts being withdrawn from their bank accounts through calls from fraudsters pretending to be bank staff. The victims would be then asked to transfer their money into a so-called safe account, which belonged to the gang. Several residents had been cheated in the past two weeks, and the amount taken had reached 300,000 yuan (US$45,000), police said.
