Polish sea captain rescued from 'killer'
A POLISH sea captain fled his ship at a local dock early yesterday morning, screaming at police to rescue him from a killer.
Startled officers later established that the terrified man, who police did not name, had mental health problems and confirmed that he was a ship's captain.
The drama ended with the middle-aged man being picked up by the foreign freighter's local agents.
Immigration police said he will be flown home for medical treatment.
The captain had grabbed his luggage and forced his way off the freighter as it docked at Wusong Port at the mouth of the Yangtze River at about 1am.
The crew failed to stop him from making the illegal landing.
Once on dry land, he stopped the first patrol officer he saw. "He threw himself into a police car to seek protection, saying that he was being chased by a killer," said Luo Lijuan, a port immigration officer.
He asked for help to get back home and to get rid of his "assailant."
"We took him to our office, gave him food and tried to get him to talk to ease his nerves and get clues as to what had happened," she said.
Officers contacted the ship's crew and discovered arrangements had been made in advance for the captain to leave the ship and return home for treatment as he was suffering from depression.
However, his condition worsened, leading to yesterday's drama.
Police said they calmed him down for several hours before he agreed to leave with the ship's agents.
The vessel set sail later yesterday with a replacement captain on his way.
