Pollutants from central, northern China causes local air 'heavily polluted'

SHANGHAI suffered heavy pollution on Friday under the effect of air pollutants coming from the central and northern China,  according to the local environmental authority.

The Air Quality Index has been rising sharply since Friday morning and had reached 221 at 11am, meanning local air was heavily polluted. Tiny particle PM2.5 was the main pollutant.

Density of PM2.5 surpassed 200 micrograms per cubic meter in districts of Putuo and Qingpu at noon, while the WHO recommended standard is no higher than 25 micrograms within a 24-hour period of time.

The smog caused by pollution led to poor visibility around the city since Friday morning. Those with heart or lung diseases are reminded to avoid out-door activities.

According to Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, wind had brought in air pollutants from central and northern provinces including Anhui, Hebei, Henan, Shandong.

The situation is forecast to last till Friday evening and air quality is expected to get better in the weekend.
