Pool safety in focus as man drowned

A MAN drowned in a local swimming pool over the weekend, following several accidental drownings in Shanghai recently.

The 26-year-old man surnamed Zhu went to a swimming pool in suburban Nanhui in the Pudong New Area on Saturday afternoon with some friends.

However, Zhu soon was found floating in the water after he swam to the deep-water zone alone, said Nanhui Natatorium officials.

Lifeguards jumped into the water and carried Zhu out of the pool and conducted emergency aid.

Zhu was pronounced dead after he was sent to a local hospital.

City police said they were investigating.

Zhu's relatives questioned why Zhu was not found sooner. But natatorium officials said there were three lifeguards on duty when the incident happened, all qualified and with licenses.

In less than a month, the city reported several drownings.

On August 21, a six-year-old boy was found drowned in a swimming pool where he was attending a swimming class.

A young man drowned after swimming in a prohibited area of the seashore at Jinshan beach on August 30.
