LOCAL power authorities said all smokestacks of the city's power plants will have PM2.5 discharge monitors installed this year.
Shanghai has 11 big power plants with 27 coal-fired units. Coal burning is a key of source of PM2.5 pollutants. To encourage plants to update equipment and use better technology, those with lower PM2.5 discharges will have preference in selling electricity when demand drops.
