Prison sentences for fatal accident drivers
TWO motorists were given prison sentences today for dangerous driving that resulted in fatal accidents, the Jing'an District People's Court said.
A motorist surnamed Hua was sentenced to one year in prison with a one-year reprieve for killing a pedestrian in an accident.
Prosecutors said Hua killed a pedestrian on Xinhua Road while pulling over at 2:54am on August 15.
The pedestrian later died of traumatic brain injury.
Hua paid 650,000 yuan (US$103,394) compensation to the victim's family.
In another case, a driver was also sentenced to one year in prison with a one-year reprieve for killing a woman while reversing a truck on Wujiang Road.
The court has dealt with 35 cases related to dangerous driving or causing traffic accident since last year.
Numbers of dangerous driving offences have risen dramatically since tougher rules which took effect in May 2011, imposing criminal punishment on drunk drivers.
Two drunk drivers also received sentences today, said the court.
They included a man who was the shareholder of a local company who was sentenced to 5 months of detention and fined 1,000 yuan for drunken driving without a license.
He was stopped by traffic police during a road check at the crossroads of Beijing Road W. and Wanhangdu Road at 3am on November 15.
The man was found to have a blood alcohol content of 2.01milligram per milliliter in a test, far over the limit of 0.8mg/ml for drunk driving.
The heaviest penalty for drunk driving is six months detention with fines.
