Probe into legality of huge advert box
OFFICIALS are investigating the legality of a huge advertising box being built on Nanjing Road W., after residents claimed it takes up too much space and is a safety hazard.
The box can be seen at landmark shopping mall Plaza 66, and is next to a huge Louis Vuitton "suitcase" advertising box that was built last year.
The construction site has taken up the space of one of two public sidewalks nearby, channeling pedestrians on to the other narrow sidewalk and forcing some on to the road among busy traffic.
A construction worker told Xinmin Evening News that other luxury brands were copying the distinctive LV suitcase and building their own huge advertising boxes.
The worker said the box would be 88 meters long and 27 meters tall and cost about 12 million yuan (US$1.85 million). Work is due to be complete by Friday.
However, the worker said the project hadn't initially been approved by city's supervising authorities, leading to discussion among residents who questioned its legality.
An official, surnamed Zhao, with Jing'an District Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, told Shanghai Daily that they were investigating whether the construction project had been approved. The results were expected today.
Zhao said one of the sidewalks occupied by the huge advertising box belongs to the Plaza 66, and they would talk with plaza officials about freeing more space for passersby, in response to the safety concerns.
Officials with Plaza 66 can not be reached yesterday.
According to city regulations on demolishing illegal buildings, developers should not construct or renovate buildings within the area of roads, greenery belts or other public revenues without receiving the permission from the supervising authority.
