Probe into promo song

ONE of the songs earmarked for the World Expo is at the center of plagiarism claims.

Officials of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination confirmed yesterday that it had withdrawn "2010 Waits for You" because of the accusations.

Huang Jianzhi, deputy director of the Expo bureau, said the song was suspended "for caution's sake."

"The bureau will decide how to deal with the song after we have an investigation result," Huang said.

It was selected as a World Expo song in 2004 and was to be a promotional song before the May 1 opening.

The song, written by Miao Sen, has performed by a number of celebrities, including Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Li Bingbing, Lang Lang, Yao Ming and Liu Xiang.

However, there were online claims that the work was not original but copied from a popular Japanese song recorded more than 10 years ago.

Huang stressed that "2010 Waits for You" was a promotional lead-up song and not the Expo's theme song, as some people believed.

Under the terms of a contract signed with the bureau, all song writers had to agree to take full responsibility for any plagiarism.
