Probe into theft of personal data
EMPLOYEES of one of the country's largest e-commerce companies are being investigated for selling the personal information of customers, Shanghai police said yesterday.
At least 11 current and former employees of Yihaodian, which sold a controlling stake to Wal-Mart last week, have been held for investigation, said Qu Weifang of the Internet safety corps of Shanghai police.
"We found secret deals between the suspects," Qu said, declining to give details as the investigation continues.
In another case, seven people were arrested in Shanghai and Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province, for downloading cell phone numbers from a national hotline and selling the info to companies.
The personal data of thousands of people had been sold since March, according to local police.
