Public services show best and worst of city
ALTHOUGH Shanghai is best for overall public services among Yangtze River Delta cities, it lags behind in environmental protection, social security and public transport, according to a study.
The city was ranked the 22nd - last place - in the environmental protection index in the 2011 urban public services index, issued by Shanghai's Jiao Tong University yesterday.
This was because of Shanghai's air pollution and the huge amount of garbage produced without proper disposal, the report said.
And the city only took 12th place in the social security index, based on each city's crime incidence and detection rate.
It also lagged behind in the index of per-capita road area for the huge population, only ranked 8th.
But the city topped most other indexes, including medical services, education and employment services.
Researchers evaluated the performance of 22 cities in the Yangtze River Delta Region based on five major categories, including infrastructure, health and safety, employment and security, education and culture.
Following Shanghai, Nanjing took second spot and Suzhou came third.
